#116 Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera, located in Oriental Mindoro, central Philippines, is known as one of the most accessible and lush island beach resorts in the Philippines. Relegated to the background with the growing popularity of island resorts such as Boracay in the Visayas, Puerto Galera  once had the fame and attraction of Boracay in the 1970s.

The main beach resorts of Puerto Galera are in Sabang, Small and Big La Laguna, White Beach and Talipanan Point. The short ride to these beaches provide fantastic views of the islands with tourists getting a glimpse of the shimmering emerald waters, tropical trees and winding, hilly roads that can compare to the more celebrated beach resorts in Hawaii. Lush mountains and the greenery of coconut groves welcome the visitors.

So-called  “backyard tourism” wherein local residents accept local and foreign tourist as stay-in guests remain popular. Several hotels and resort chains, however, have sadly made their mark in recent years, eroding Puerto Galera’s rustic charm.

The channel between Puerto Galera and Verde Island, known internationally as the Verde Island Passage, is  considered  as  “one of the world’s richest marine biodiversity” according to American scientists – making Puerto Galera’s underwater world a favorite amongst dive enthusiasts.  Puerto Galera also has the biggest number of dive schools in the entire Philippines offering both PADI and BSAC courses in various languages.

Mabuhay ang Puerto Galera!
