Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon (literally and roughly translated as “The Way We Were, How Are You Today) is a 1976 film directed by Eddie Romero starring Christopher de Leon and former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz.
Set at the turn of the 20th century this historical film epic depicts in a romantic manner the Filipino revolt against the Spaniards and the betrayal by the Americans who eventually colonised the Philippine Islands under the guise of economic development and promise of independence from its former Spanish masters.
Winning a slew of FAMAS (Philippine equivalent of the Oscars) and Gawad Urian awards, the film is one of the rare 1970s movies that tackled socially-conscious dramas against the backdrop of history and the Filipino’s search for identity without falling into cliches. Superbly shot and directed and often cited for its technical achievements, the film earned plaudits for its innovative style and also reaped honours in many Asian film festivals. Romero’s film is also often listed in the Top 50 best Filipinos films of all time.
Long live Philippine cinema!
